Help! I can’t find my septic lids
How to locate your septic lids with Anytime Septic
As a septic professional with years in the field, one of the most common questions we get from homeowners is: “How do I find the lids to my septic tank?” Whether you're preparing for regular maintenance or an emergency pump-out, knowing where your septic lids are can save time, money, and unnecessary digging.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you locate your septic tank lids safely and efficiently.
Understanding the Basics
Most standard residential septic tanks have two lids, sometimes three (but this is very rare especially in San Diego County), and they are typically located 6 to 8 feet apart from each other. These lids give access to different compartments within your tank and are essential for proper septic inspection, septic maintenance and septic cleaning.
Know Where to Start
First look for an as-built. If you don’t have an as-built reach out to us, Anytime Septic, and we would be happy to see if we can pull one from the county office for you. If the county office doesn’t have one on file then it’s time to start looking in your yard.
Your best starting point is to head outside and locate the clean-out pipe typically about 5 to 15 feet from your home’s foundation. From there, your lids should be close.
Look for Clues in the Yard
Typically septic tank lids are often under grass that grows faster or dies off quicker depending on moisture and nutrients. So take a look around and see if you see landscaping that looks a little different than the rest of the yard. Additionally, over time, lids can cause slight indentations in the lawn.
Start Digging Carefully
Once you’ve zeroed in on a likely area:
Dig gently and methodically, starting with a shallow trench.
Most septic lids are buried 6 to 24 inches below the surface, but some may be deeper depending on your property grade.
As you dig, watch for edges of concrete or plastic – lids are typically round or rectangular and 18–24 inches across.
After locating the first lid, measure 6 to 8 feet in a straight line along the tank’s length to locate the second lid.
Pro Tip: Mark the lids with risers or concrete markers once located. This will save significant time and labor in the future or install risers on your tank. We would be happy to help with that!
What Not to Do
Don't assume the tank is under your deck or driveway. While it’s possible, tanks should not be installed where they can’t be easily accessed.
Don’t use heavy machinery or excessive force when digging. You risk cracking the lid or damaging the tank.
